Grand Silence

The silent time offers us a unique opportunity. Exterior silence is the appearance of quiet. Interior silence is allowing a space in which God can communicate with us.

Please observe Grand Silence during the retreat except during scheduled discussions, meals with conversation or private interviews. We will practice silence of body, speech and mind. Any form of communication with others, including eye contact, gestures, sign language, written notes, etc. takes us away from our intent. Conversation is allowed during some evening meals in order to build community in Christ. These evening meals are rare gifts in which we are provided an opportunity soul-friend with one another.

You may, however, speak with a facilitator whenever necessary and approach staff with any problems related to food, accommodations, health, etc. Please keep these contacts to a minimum. Interviews with a facilitator are for the purpose of clarifying actual practical problems concerned with the method of centering prayer.

Together we must be alert to maintain an inner attitude of understanding and compassionate kindness towards all others who have joined us in the retreat, regardless of whether they appear to be keeping the rule of "Silence." Each of us brings our own gift of interior intention to the whole. You are responsible only for your part.

God's special graces for each of you. Have a good retreat!
